Malik's Story:
Malik, a fifth grader, hyperventilates, shakes uncontrollably, and rhythmically rocks back and forth in his seat
when reading; even second grade text is too difficult for him. In an intake interview, his mother cried as she
explained that she fears for her son’s future but she has been unable to afford the reading help that her son
requires. A local for-profit learning center had quoted her a $7,000 fee for services.
Terrell’s Story:
Terrell is 28 years old and reads at an early third grade level. He wants to complete his GED to give his family a
better life but fears that he is “doomed to fail” because reading is “too complex” for him. He called LEAP because
he is “a hands-on type of guy” and “not stupid” but has been unable to find a program to help him.
Jade’s Story:
Jade, a third grader who lives in Sheridan Parkside, has cerebral palsy, comes from a family with no
transportation, and reads two grade levels below where he should. A participant in the Reading Rally Program
offered by LEAP on-site at the Sheridan Parkside Community Center at no cost, Jade increased his word
recognition skills by over 27%. Twenty-one other children in the Sheridan Parkside Community also received
reading assistance that they otherwise might not have received.
