LITERACY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
Are you wondering if your child is reading at his or her grade level? A professional reading evaluation will be
provided to students in grades 1 - 12 using a highly regarded standardized reading achievement test. The
test will be supervised and scores by a literacy expert with a Ph.D. in reading education. Specific information
about your child's word recognition and comprehension skill levels will be mailed. This assessment is required
for all children registering for the Reading Rally Remedial Program (see below).
Schedule: One session. Choice of either Saturday, February 7 or Saturday, February 21. (Please indicate
date/time on the registration form.)
9:00am - 10:30am grades 1-3
11:00am - 12:30pm grades 4-6
1:00pm - 2:30pm grades 7-12
Place: LEAP's Office (room 214 - Sheridan Building)
Fee: $75.00 ($50.00 if registering for Reading Rally Remedial Program listed below)

READING RALLY REMEDIAL PROGRAM
** Pre-Assessment in Our Literacy Assessment Program Required Prior to Start Date (see above)**
The Reading Rally Program is a remedial reading program for students in grades 1 - 12 who are experiencing
difficulties with reading and writing. Specific individual learning goals will be developed by a certified literacy
and spelling development. A balance literacy approach and research-based strategies are used in lessons
provided by trained instructors.
Schedule: Weekly on Thursday or Saturday. March 5 - April 4 (5 sessions). There is an option to attend both
days.
Choice of one or both days:
Thursday, 5:30 - 6:45pm and/or
Saturday, 10:30 - 11:45am
* No class on Tuesday, November 4 & Tuesday, November 11.
Place: LEAP's Office (room 214 - Sheridan Building)
Fee: $100.00 for one day weekly / $200.00 for two days weekly (A limited number of partial scholarships are
available based on financial need - call LEAP's office for consideration)

ACADEMIC TUTORING PROGRAM
Did you know reading is involved in every subject? Even math! Students in grades 1-12 will be provided
assistance with learning in all subjects. Included is help with homework, school projects, writing assignments,
reading skills and whatever else is hindering your child's success in school.
Schedule: Weekly on Thursday or Saturday. March 5 - April 4 (5 sessions). There is an option to attend both
days.

FREEDOM WRITERS PROGRAM
Made famous by the 2007 movie Freedom Writers, this powerful literacy program is aimed at teens in grades 8-
12. Participants will read and respond to the book Freedom Writers Diary, write their own diary entries, and
participate in collaborative activities that teach critical analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The Freedom Writers
Diary contains sensitive subject matter and parental permission is required.
Schedule: Monday, January 26-March 23 (8 sessions), 6:30-8:00pm.
*No class Monday, February 16 due to the Ken-Ton Schools spring break.
Place: Library, Sheridan Parkside Community Center
Fee: $80 (Free to Sheridan Parkside residents thanks to a grant from the Ken-Ton Friends of Youth
Foundation. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to others based on financial need – call LEAP’
s office for consideration)
